Nicaragua: 27. – 30.12.09

We have been glad to leave Honduras behind us. No not because we felt insecure, but because of the overly corrupt police, they were just after a bribe for the last two day for whatever reason they just made up.

In Nicaragua we were prepared for the worst and hoped for the best and indeed here we didn’t have any troubles at all.

First we were heading towards the small colonial town of Leon where we gazed at the scenic Cathedrals and strolled through the old alleys, before we continued for a sleeping place at the shores of Lake Managua just at the bottom of Volcano Momotombo. We would have liked to take a swim in the lake but the brown “soup” was just not really inviting.

The next day brought us, with a little stroll through Granada, to San Jorge, where a car ferry brought the three of us to the Isla Omtepe. The island exists of two volcanos that that reach about 1’600 (5000) and 1’300 meter (4000 ft) out of the lake and are connected with bed of lava to make one island out of them. We drove all over the island and enjoyed the wild nature. Unfortunately the island is fenced off on most parts so we had some difficulties to find a suitable sleeping place. There was also a rain front approaching, that made our plan of climbing a volcano a farce. That is why we continued a day earlier than expected towards Costa Rica.

We’ll read us from there
