La Libertad, Cajamarca, Amazonas: 27.10. – 02.11.2010 With full steam we ‘raced‘along the coast to Huanchaco. What got us to rush was not the famous Caballitos de Totora, reed horses, but a pork roast. Already in North America we could enjoy the famous roast of Ruth and Walter. Now, after more than a year and thousands of kilometers further, it should come to a reunion. The delight was high and the nights long.

Ica, Huancayo, Ancash: 08. – 26.10.2010 In South America it seems people got calmness and cosines put in their cradle. A chat here, a talk there and of course a day without siesta is not a successful day. In that aspect, we Europeans should get a slice off of them. But if you put a Peruvian behind the wheel, it is strongly recommended to get lost as quick as possible. It seems like a Peruvian is only a good driver if he pushes, squeezes and passes on every single possibility and very often also impossibility. The whole attitude is accompanied by constant honking. Why the horn isn’t displayed in their flag is still a mystery for us.

Cusco: 26.09. – 07.10.2010 We got to know the Peruvians as open minded and curious folk and even got attached to them. That was until one of those youngsters crossed our path. In Central America we kind of got used to children begging at the road side. But here in South America we have been quite surprised to see so many kids holding their hands open, with us of course for nothing (We want them to go to school and not go begging.) Even more surprised we have been as two stones just nearly missed Nistos window at the rear end.

Puno, Arequipa: 11. – 25.09.2010 In the meantime it is over a year ago since we walked down the Grand Canyon and up in a day, carried our dive gear inclusive weights 200 meters down to Crater Lake and paddled against 25 knots of wind in the Johnson Straight. Long time no crazy stuff anymore, for Sonja definitely too long, so it was brewing in her little head; If we already are in this altitude all the time, why not climb a bit higher, maybe a 6’000 meter peak?!?
