California: 03. – 15.10.2009 Our last couple days in North America have come, and we started them in the City of Angels or Los Angeles. And fist it meant to secure a Campground. Indeed we found one and after Nisto was inspected thoroughly if he fits in the image of the huge American rigs we got to stay.
The Campground was situated
great just along a wide beach. You just shouldn’t look skywards or open
your ears since it was just on the extension of the departure runway of
LAX, where every 5 minutes a plane takes off. Ok, at night it was at
least a little reduced. But right on time, 6 am they started again.
Los Angeles isn’t just big or
huge, this City is over dimensional. The Highway system is comparable
with the “Ruhrgebiet” in Germany and in rush hours all 6 lanes (one
direction) are always jammed. And even on Sundays we had our share of
traffic jam. But nothing could hinder us so off it goes.
First we went along the Sunset
Boulevard to Beverly Hills with the luxury homes of the rich and
famous, to Hollywood to the walk of fame with the stars engraved in the
sidewalk also passing the Mann’s Chinese Theater where some chosen
stars left their hand and footprints in cement. Of course a detour to
the Hollywood sign was a must on that tour as well.
After that sightseeing tour we
visited Markus’ guest family, where he lived during his language course
12 years back, and indeed he got immediately recognized again. Together
we spent a great evening and two more, they just invited us to stay
with them. Besides they showed us the second largest fair of LA. Thank
you two for a marvelous time. During that time we also went to the
Rodeo Drive, Los Angeles most exclusive shopping mile, no, the credit
card limit wasn’t touched, (no more space in Nisto) and we have been
biking from Venice Beach all the way to Malibu Beach and back.
Further we went into the
interior to the Joshua Tree National Park where we spent two lovely
days between the tree like Yucca Palms (Joshua Tree) and peculiar rock
landscapes, before we started our preparation to cross the border to
Mexico. The campground at the Santee Lakes was the perfect base for
this operation. Besides that two porous fuel hoses from the spare tank
had to be exchanged, where else to accomplish a task like that then on
the by now famous Home Depot. That’s where we stud half a day and
Nistos interior had to move out while we have been working inside. Once
we even where asked if we sell something, must have looked like it.
As we finished our to-do-list
we went to our last campground just at the Mexican border to Tecate.
After 7 month and 11days or 44’401 driven kilometers (27’750,6 mi) we
said our goodbyes to this part of our world. Now we are curious what we
will experience further south.
Hasta Pronto
Sonja and Markus
